BASE Videofest

Film ReelsThe 9th Annual Bridge Day BASE VideoFest will take place at the Holiday Lodge Oak Hill's "Rafters" Bar on Thursday, October 13, 2011 at 9pm. Anthony "Donk" DiCola will serve as the VideoFest Coordinator/Host while JJ Schuster fires up the DVDs. The BASE VideoFest will allow BASE jumpers to show their craziest, lowest, longest, and favorite BASE jumps on multiple big screen TV's for hundreds of anxious viewers. Thousands of dollars in cash and prizes will be handed out to the winners. So sit back, grab a drink, and feel the adrenaline with us at the Bridge Day Videofest.

1st Place Prize
This year, we'll be giving away another Rigging Adventures dual-pin BASE harness/container from Mark Kruse (call 856-217-9778) along with some cash. Pilot chutes, coupons, T-shirts, hats, and other prizes are often handed out each year.

Rules:

  • Due to event time constraints, we will be limiting entries to 10 with 5 stand-bys if there are any no-shows. We will pre-screen each video prior to the event to get a better assessment. We will still accept entries at the event, but they will not have the advantage of the pre-screening points (which could affect overall scores). If we have reached the 10 video limit, it will be at the judges discretion how many more they are willing to see beyond 10. If delivering it in person, email Donk the entry form by October 1st and have your video to us no later than 7:00pm on Videofest night. At a minimum, please let us know via email by October 1st if you will be bringing a late entry. We will have all the forms available at the Holiday Lodge for walk-in entries starting at 5:00 PM.
  • Formats: MiniDV tape (NTSC), DVD (NTSC), and some digital formats on SD card (contact us).
  • Videos must contain BASE jumps, but can also contain footage of related sports (skydiving, paragliding, hang gliding, etc.). Any BASE jumps, big-ways, exotic locations, low pulls, wingsuit jumps, incidents, and anything else that'll pump up the crowd will surely impress the judges.
  • Videos cannot exceed 10 minutes in length. If your video is longer than 10 minutes, have it cued to the footage you would like the judges to score from.
  • Each video will be scored in four categories: Action (the jumps), Story (why you are jumping), Cinematography (how good is the footage), Editing, and an Overall score. Additional pre-screen points will be awarded to each video that is entered prior to October 1.
  • You will be asked to fill out an entry form that will include the name of the movie, who produced, directed, and edited it, and a 1-2 sentence description prepared for the presenter to announce to the crowd. You will also have the option to introduce your video to the audience and judges.
  • Winners will be awarded at the Saturday night jumper meeting and videos shown to a crowd of hundreds immediately after.
  • Please follow the "10 minute" rule or have a 10 minute "Trailer" of your full length production.
  • If your entry is unedited or a "rough-cut" please have it queued to the beginning and pay close attention to the time. Once again, few entries got cut short before their "money shot" because the video went well beyond the 10 minutes and/or the judges asked for the next video. Please keep in mind that the judges have to watch 10-15 of these and it can get pretty grueling, so have your best ready to roll. Also, pay close attention to when your video is going to be played so that you can introduce the video (optional) and monitor the playback.
  • The videos don't necessarily have to be from 2011, but entries from previous years will not be permitted.
  • Submit your videos no later than October 1, 2011 to:
    Donk Productions
    Attn: Anthony DiCola
    11184 Antioch, #198
    Overland Park, KS 66210-2420
  • At a minimum, please contact Donk if you need more time or you are planning on bringing your tape with you to Bridge Day.
  • All videos will be returned to the entrants.
  • All videos will be considered copyrighted and the sole property of the entrant. No unauthorized usage, duplication, alteration, publishing, or redistribution will be performed by us in any way, shape, or form.
  • We reserve the right to add, delete, or modify the above rules without notice.

Prizes:

  • 1st Place: $250 + Rigging Adventures harness/container + parachuting industry donations
  • 2nd Place: $150 + parachuting industry donations
  • 3rd Place: $100 + parachuting industry donations

DonkAnyone who would like to volunteer to be a judge, please contact Donk. Donk is a veteran skydiver since 1987 and has made hundreds of BASE-jumps since his first jump at Bridge Day 2000. His most memorable BASE jumps include the Eiger in Switzerland, 2003 record 19-way at the Perrine Bridge in Idaho, the Cave of the Swallows in Mexico, 11-way Birdman flock at Kjerag Norway, The Kuala Lumpur Tower Malaysia and many other "undisclosed" jumps domestically and around the world. Donk is a former USAF SOG ROMAD and is where he got his first taste of adrenaline induced adventure. Today, Tony is an senior engineer for one of America's largest telecommunications companies but really lives for the adventure and travel BASE offers as well as building new friendships with some of the most colorful personalities in the world. Since BASE has very limited formal training and progression, he views welcoming and mentoring new BASE jumpers to the sport as the most rewarding aspect. Donk has been credited with several written publications and video productions; most notably the 2003 BANFF Mountain Film Festival finalist "Cinclus Vision" which earned him honorable mention and has been aired in hundreds of theaters and closed circuit televisions across the globe.

2003 Videofest

BASE Videofest 2010

The 2010 BASE Videofest was shown on numerous large screen TV's in the Red Dog River Saloon located at River Expeditions. Seven videos were judged and first place walked home with more than $1000 in cash and prizes. Donk and JJ Schuster again entertained the crowd with exciting and innovative contests for the spectators. Videofest prizes were donated by:

1st Place - "F*** That! I Can Die For Free" by Joe Nesbitt. Cincy crew video with great carnage and plenty of real BASE jumps. See image below.
2nd Place - "September Sessions" by Matt Gerdes. According to my notes, the judges wrote "Sick" and "Wahoo, I need another shot". A great proximity flying video.
3rd Place - "Arizona BASE 2010" by Matt Frohlich.
Honorable Mentions - "Norway Heliboogie - The Canadia Cut" by Scott Stevens.

1st Place Videofest

BASE Videofest 2009

The BASE Videofest was shown on numerous large screen TV's in the Red Dog River Saloon. 2009 was a new year with a new venue and not without it's challenges, but overall it was another great year for the Videofest with nine entries in all. A "star studded" panel of judges was in attendance as part of the 30th Anniversary of Bridge Day which included Rick Harrison, Randy Harrison, Spacey Tracy, Bruce Kramer, and Tom Aiello. All the videos were outstanding with one clear winner and the rest ultimately decided by a point or less. Videofest prizes were provided by:

1st Place - "Hobos" by Lane Coates, Adrian Binnion, & Chris Stokely. A sweet tribute to train jumps from long ago with some recent cut-in footage of a "hobo" jump completed at the same location (obviously hitting a warm spot with the judges).
2nd Place - "Melodica" by Team Ill Vision (Jhonny Florez). An excellent production from Team Ill Vision including an opening sequence of Avery pulling low and landing line twists just after line stretch...again. Pull higher Avery!
3rd Place - "I Love BASE" by Justin Dailey. Great footage and some carnage complete with "Scuba BASE" and Maggot's secrets.
Honorable Mentions - "3 Years and Counting" by Matt Frohlich and "Pablos Lame BASE Video" by Paul Duchesne
Best Documentary - "Casa Rosa" by Gustavo Abah. Brazilian brothers breaking new ground in the sport.

BASE Videofest 2008

Videofest prizes were provided by:

1st Place - "Friends in High Places" by Elliot Barstow. Elliot has been a contestant in previous years and this year he wooed the crowed with a masterful compilation of BASE jumps and was the obvious crowd favorite Saturday night.
2nd Place - "Why Do I Do This?" by Randy "Ungrateful Bastard" Persi. Best opening song choice to date; "If you're going to be dumb you gotta be tuff!" and the footage to match. Carnage is always a crowd pleaser.
3rd Place - "A Shadows Tale" by Paul Duchesne. Another great BASE compilation with some amazing footage from all of our favorite objects in the US and abroad as well as some unique "bandit jumps".
Honorable Mentions: - "Ariel Progressions" by David Coco; "Gravity Rats, Out on Bail" by Teresa Colaluca

BASE Videofest 2007

Videofest prizes were provided by:

1st Place - "Life's a Journey" by Lonnie Bissonnette. Probably the best story ever told about a BASE jumper's journey from battling the beast, recovering, and then continuing his pursuit of the sport. Truly inspirational and shows what is at the heart of a pure BASE jumper and the Canadian BASE crew that helped him to continue his journey.
2nd Place - "Fly the Line" by Boris Pecnik. Fly the line was offered an opportunity to enter this years contest again because of a rule clarification that was not clearly understood last year. Once again this is an insane vision of proximity flying with the masters of flight from Phoenix Fly.
3rd Place - "Yeah Buddy Yeah" by Sam Gouws. Proof that quality is not in quantity. This quick blitz of some very unique objects and challenging exit points really impressed the crowd and judges.
Honorable Mentions: - "Sunny Days" by Elliot Barstow, "Kolorado" by LeRoy Buckley

BASE Videofest 2006

Videofest prizes were provided by:

1st Place - "Journey to the Center" by Jeb Corliss. A 4-minute trailer that set a new high for cinematography, editing, and story. A most impressive compilation of what is sure to be an epic feature film about BASE jumping into a deep cave in China.
2nd Place - "Down with Society" by Jimmy Halliday. A classic best of BASE and representation of the insanity and personalities that make BASE jumpers who they are. A perfect compilation of BASE jumping and stupid human tricks with a very smooth edit.
3rd Place - "The Free World" by Richard Alexander. Probably the best pure BASE compilation entered, filled with spectacular jumps from amazing locations across the globe.
4th Place - "When Good Times go Bad" by Sam Gouws. Some great BASE footage in a tight edit and filled with lots of that "stuff" we all hate to see but are compelled to watch.

BASE Videofest 2005

Videofest prizes were provided by:

1st Place - "As the Rush Comes" by BC Productions (Ray and Bridgette Murphy).
2nd Place - "Thread the Needle" by Nate Varns.
3rd Place - "Mucho BASE" by James Boole.

BASE Videofest 2004

Videofest prizes were provided by:

1st Place - Triax Productions for the time lapse packing sequence in their latest film "Continuum II".
2nd Place - Adrenaline Exploits (Jay Epstein) Mexico BASE Video that included the Cave of the Swallows and El Gigante.
3rd Place - Robert Pecnik (Phoenix Fly) and his amazing BASE wingsuit and track pants footage.

BASE Videofest 2003

Videofest prizes were provided by:

  • Vertical Visions - Raptor belly mount camera platform, Oakley backpack, and a 5-pack of miniDV tapes.
  • Martini Shot Films - One Bridge Day 2002 video.
  • Misc. companies - Hats, 8x10 photo enlargements, etc.

1st Place - Jeb Corliss for his documentary "A Year in the Life". Highlights included NYC hotel jumps, canopy collisions with waterfalls, and some amazing aerials.
2nd Place - Tony DiCola (Donk) for his Norway wingsuit videos from this summer. The most talked about scene from this video was Harry P. flying next to the waterfall.
3rd Place - Johnny Utah for his "Huge" video showing the TF 19-way jump and Moscow tower leaps. The 19-way video was amazing, showing many different camera angles. Of course, it was also amazing because I was on the load (shameless, self-promotion).
Most Entertaining - Bertrand Cloutier for his video showing all the cool things you can do with your face and mouth when a 120 mph wind hits it just right in freefall. Also, there was a cool leap off a moving vehicle off a small bridge into water. Bertrand won a Bridge Day 2003 hat.
